BROTHERS BATTLE BOLOS

LEXINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA
JANUARY 5, 1963

THE FLYING SCOTT BROTHERS - SANDY and GEORGE

THE GREAT BOLO and BOLO

P.Y. CHUNG
---
A four match card returns professional wrestling to the LEXINGTON YMCA tonight following a two week holiday layoff.

The Canadian duo of GEORGE and SANDY SCOTT, known in wrestling as THE FLYING SCOTTS, return as a team after a very long abscence. They have a tall order ahead of them as they are paired against the masked terror combo of THE GREAT BOLO and BOLO in the evening's best-of-three falls main event.

Midget stars will also be on hand in a special event when LITTLE BOY BLUE faces PEE WEE LOPEZ.

Two single bouts are also scheduled with the Oriental craftsman P.Y. CHUNG meeting DON WHITTIER, and JOHNNY HEIDEMAN tackles EDUARDO CASTILLIO in the 8:15 opener.

SEEMS LIKE 10 YEARS, BUT ACTUALLY 30

Where does the time go?

The BIGGEST night of MID-ATLANTIC CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING in my home town of SALISBURY, NORTH CAROLINA, had to have occurred JUNE 10, 1986 when JCP brought their top mat stars to town for a double TV taping at CATAWBA COLLEGE's GOODMAN GYMNASIUM.

The event was sponsored by the SALISBURY JAYCEES.

SALISBURY POST - JUNE 10, 1986

SALISBURY POST - JUNE 10, 1986

The line-up was stellar !

Appearing were RIC FLAIR, ARN ANDERSON, DUSTY RHODES, THE ROCK & ROLL EXPRESS, ABDULLAH THE BUTCHER, IVAN and NIKITA KOLOFF, 'CHIEF' WAHOO McDANIEL, THE MIDNIGHT EXPRESS with JIM CORNETTE, MAGNUM T.A., TULLY BLANCHARD, RONNIE GARVIN, JIMMY 'BOOGIE WOOGIE MAN' VALIANT, GORGEOUS JIMMY GARVIN with PRECIOUS, MANNY 'RAGIN BULL' FERNANDEZ and enough 'jobbers' to fill out the two hours of television matches.

JOHNNY WEAVER was there as commentator, working with BOB CAUDLE.

SANDY SCOTT was there as the road agent.

Through 'connections' with some friends in the JAYCEES, I was able to work 'backstage'. Having a choice, I picked the 'heel' side.

I remember being totally intimidated by NIKITA KOLOFF (nothing he did to me -- he just looked like he wanted to be left alone. I complied.)
---
JIM CORNETTE was the nicest guy. We talked for a while. He was 'on' even when he was 'off'. BOBBY EATON was also very cordial.

As ARN ANDERSON was walking through the door into the gymnasium, he handed me his eyeglasses and said, "Will you hold onto these for me, please?" After his match (which was the TV main event -- he and RIC FLAIR against RICKY MORTON and ROBERT GIBSON), when he arrived back at the door, I was impressed that he thanked the SALISBURY policemen who had escorted him to and from the ring. I handed him back his glasses, and he said "Thanks so much. I appreciate it. I can't see a damn thing without them."

The unadvertised 'dark match' after the taping sessions were over was, incredibly, a TAPED FIST match between DUSTY RHODES and ABDULLAH THE BUTCHER!

I have to say it that on the 'bloodometer', it was the reddest match I had seen in years, topped only a few years ago when GEORGE SOUTH JR. opened an artery battling IVAN KOLOFF in STATESVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA.

The CATAWBA COLLEGE gymnasium was PACKED. The SALISBURY POST estimated the crowd as a minimum of 3000 people.

The four hundred ringside seats were SOLD OUT three weeks before the event.

The terms of the event with JCP were as follows: JCP received 90% of the box office, with the SALISBURY JAYCEES getting the remaining 10% and all concessions.

My JAYCEE friend who was in charge of the event and had gotten me in as 'STAFF', recently told me that he and SANDY SCOTT counted the box office receipts (several times). SANDY then did some paper work, then gave the JAYCEES their 10%.

The SALISBURY JAYCEES made a ton of money that night. Their cut of the ticket sales was substantial, and lots of hot dogs, popcorn, pizza and soft drinks were consumed by the crowd.

The event worked out so well with the local organization that my friend won the JAYCEES PROJECT OF THE YEAR award.

Below is an article written by STEVE PHILLIPS which appeared in the following day's SALISBURY POST:

CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA

SWEDE HANSON

KURT and KARL VON BRAUNER

RIP HAWK

EDDIE GRAHAM
---
The rugged German team of brothers KURT and KARL VON BRAUNER has become the scourge of tag team wrestling in the Carolinas, and they're reveling in the notoriety.

And the team that would like most to unseat the vicious Germans as tag team 'kingpins', SWEDE HANSON and DR. EDDIE GRAHAM, gets another chance in the headliner of tonight's PARK CENTER wrestling card.

HANSON and GRAHAM have lost two furious bloody bouts to the VON BRAUNERs recently and are greedy for revenge. They'll get one hour and two-of-three falls to pull off the whipping they're predicting they will dish out to the Germans.

The card's semi-final event has TOM BRADLEY going against fan favorite GEORGE BECKER, and the main prelim sends DON McCLARITY against RIP 'THE PROFILE' HAWK.

Action kicks off at 8:15.

The card gets underway at 8:15 sharp.

Tonight's program will close out wrestling at the YMCA for two weeks because of upcoming basketball tournaments. Wrestling returns to LEXINGTON on March 9.

Two different CANADIAN brother tag teams * will be taking parts in a pair of LEXINGTON YMCA tag wrestling matches tonight.

The action begins at 8:15.

Popular GEORGE and SANDY SCOTT, former World Tag Team Champions, and known as THE FLYING SCOTTS, will battle the treacherous duo of the rowdy citizen of St. Jo, Missouri, THE MISSOURI MAULER and his Japanese judo expert partner, HIRO MATSUDA. MAULER and MATSUDA will be accompanied to the ring and advised by their manager GENERAL HOMER O'DELL.

The evening's second tag battle will send good guys SILENTO RODRIGUEZ and GREG PETERSON against rowdies RONNIE and TERRY GARVIN.

Both tag matches will be fought under the best two-out-of-three fall rules.

The hated NIKITA MULKOVICH squares off against ex-footballer LES WOLFE, and ANGELO MARTINELLI faces 'Bulldog' LEE HENNING in the card's singles contests.

* GEORGE and SANDY SCOTT were really brothers, the GARVINS were not.

BECKER BACK IN LEXINGTON

LEXINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA
August 15, 1961

GEORGE BECKER and ABE JACOBS, a couple of top heroes with local wrestling fans, will return to the LEXINGTON YMCA for mat action tonight.

The two gladiators, who recently have operated as a tag team, will divide their forces this week to meet rugged opponents in a pair of singles main events.

BECKER will battle the mighty Greek star, CHRIS AVEROFF, while JACOBS will scrap with big SWEDE HANSON.

Both matches are set for the best-of-three falls.

Midget stars take over in a tag team match pitting popular little guys FRENCHY SEMARD and TINY BELL against the not-so-popular duo of FARMER McGRUDER and PEE WEE LOPEZ.

A preliminary match between SID JONES and PRINCE OMAR will open the card at 8:15.

50 YEARS AGO IN LEXINGTON

July 16, 1966
LEXINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA

THE MISSOURI MAULER

THE GREAT MALENKO

ABE JACOBS

LUTHER LINDSAY

PENNY BANNER

GEORGE 'CATALINA' DRAKE

Popular JOHNNY WEAVER, at least 'temporary' SOUTHERN HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION, will take New Zealander ABE JACOBS as a partner tonight and will face THE MISSOURI MAULER and THE GREAT MALENKO in a two-out-of-three falls tag team main event at the LEXINGTON YMCA.

Last Saturday night in the ring, WEAVER had one fall in a championship bout against the title-holding MAULER when all types of excitement broke out. Referee Walter Buckner was injured and could not continue officiating. WEAVER, trying to aid the fallen ref, was attacked by the MAULER, and JACOBS came in to lend a hand. The MAULER took the low road and ran, with WEAVER grabbing the championship belt, saying he plans to keep it until the NWA officials make a ruling. Tonight's grudge match grows out of the turmoil.

"He never beat me for the belt, but he stole it anyway," claims the MAULER. "He's just as low down as the chicken thieves we've got back home in St. Jo. As far as I'm concerned, WEAVER is nothing but a chicken thief, and he's gonna pay."

Another tag match is scheduled with two falls necessary to determine a winner. Popular power hitters GEORGE 'CATALINA' DRAKE and Negro star LUTHER LINDSAY will meet CORSICA JEAN and Lexington newcomer 'BRUISER' BOB MORGAN.

MISS PENNY BANNER and MISS DIXIE JORDAN face off in a special ladies match, and IKE EAKINS battles KEN HOLLIS in the opening match, which gets underway at 8:15.

GREAT PARK CENTER TIMES

It's difficult and somewhat sad to realize that this JIM CROCKETT PROMOTIONS
wrestling card at CHARLOTTE'S PARK CENTER occurred over fifty-five years ago...

THE AMAZING ZUMA

THE GREAT BOLO

HAYSTACK CALHOUN

'IRISH' MIKE CLANCY

LARRY 'CRUSHER' HAMILTON

May 3, 1960
CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA

Two of the hottest wrestling personalities to hit the Charlotte grappling scene in many years will collide tonight at the PARK CENTER to settle who is better.

It's THE AMAZING ZUMA, the acrobatic South American, going against the hooded menace, THE GREAT BOLO. They'll get one hour, two of three falls, to decide the winner.

The semiwindup has JACKIE FARGO and DON STEVENS tackling rugged RAY VILLMER and 'IRISH' MIKE CLANCY in tag team warfare.

The main prelim has 600-pounder HAYSTACK CALHOUN going against the nasty German KARL VON HESS and the 8:15 opener sends BOB BOYER against LARRY 'CRUSHER' HAMILTON **

** LARRY 'CRUSHER' HAMILTON later wrestled as THE MISSOURI MAULER.
